SUMMARY:Junior Naturalist Camp
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 2026 Junior Naturalist Program for students e
 ntering grades 6â€“8 in September 2026. The program will take place at t
 he Madrona Marsh Preserve and Nature Center\, located at 3201 Plaza del 
 Amo\, Torrance\, CA 90503. For additional information\, please call 310-
 782-3989.\n&nbsp\;\n\n\nWe are very excited that your child will be part
 icipating in this program. We have planned a week full of fascinating\, 
 exciting\, educational\, and engaging activities for our Junior Naturali
 sts. We look forward to sharing our love of nature\, science\, and envir
 onmental exploration with your child.\n\nARRIVAL AND PICK-UP INFORMATION
 \n\nParents/guardians\, please drop off and pick up your child each day 
 in the Nature Center Classroom on time.\nâ€¢ Drop-off: 9:00 AM\nâ€¢ Pick
 -up: 3:00 PM\nIf someone other than a parent or caregiver will be pickin
 g up your child\, that person must be at least 18 years old. Please prov
 ide written permission including the individual's name.\n\nMINIMUM ENROL
 LMENT REQUIREMENT\n\nA minimum of 10 students is required for the Junior
  Naturalist Program. If minimum enrollment is not met\, families will be
  notified approximately 3â€“4 days before the start date regarding any p
 rogram cancellation.\n\nJUNIOR NATURALIST GOALS\n\nThrough hands-on scie
 ntific investigations\, field observations\, and stewardship activities\
 , students will develop an appreciation for the natural world while lear
 ning how to protect and conserve local ecosystems.\n\nStudents will gain
  experience using scientific tools\, collecting environmental data\, rec
 ording observations\, and communicating their discoveries as Junior Natu
 ralists.\n\nPROGRAM DETAILS\n\nThroughout the week\, students will parti
 cipate in group and individual activities focused on ecology\, biodivers
 ity\, water quality\, climate change\, conservation\, habitat restoratio
 n\, and scientific research. Students will maintain a field journal to r
 ecord observations\, scientific data\, sketches\, and reflections. Each 
 student will also complete a project related to nature and Madrona Marsh
 .\n\nActivities are designed to help students better understand what it 
 means to be a naturalist while developing observation\, research\, commu
 nication\, and stewardship skills.\n\nThe program provides a light lunch
  consisting of a sandwich\, fruit\, chips\, and a cookie. Drinking water
  will be available throughout the day.\n\nPROPOSED WEEKLY SCHEDULE\n\nDa
 y 1: Ecology and Biodiversity\nEcological pyramids\, food webs\, species
  classification\, marsh exploration\, and biodiversity surveys.\n\nDay 2
 : Water Quality and Wetlands\nWater chemistry investigations including p
 H\, dissolved oxygen\, nitrate\, and phosphate testing. Students will co
 llect water samples and explore wetland habitats.\n\nDay 3: Native Plant
 s\, Restoration\, and Invasive Species\nNative plant identification\, pr
 opagation techniques\, habitat restoration\, and invasive species manage
 ment.\n\nDay 4: Climate Change and Conservation\nClimate science\, carbo
 n sequestration\, wetland importance\, conservation challenges\, and env
 ironmental monitoring activities.\n\nDay 5: Research and Stewardship Day
 \nStudents will prepare and present mini-projects or posters based on th
 eir observations and investigations conducted throughout the week. Stude
 nts will also participate in a stewardship activity and celebrate their 
 accomplishments during the Junior Naturalist Certificate Ceremony.\nWHAT
  TO BRING\n\nâ€¢ Jacket\, hat\, and sunscreen.\nâ€¢ Closed-toe shoes.\nâ
 €¢ Comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor activities and nature explo
 ration.\nâ€¢ Small snack (optional).\nâ€¢ Reusable water bottle.\nâ€¢ Sm
 all backpack for personal belongings.\nâ€¢ Markers or colored pencils fo
 r drawing and journaling activities.\nâ€¢ Students may bring an iPhone\,
  tablet\, or camera with the necessary charger only if needed Â  Â  Â  f
 or their project. Students are solely responsible for their equipment.\n
 â€¢ Labeling belongings is highly recommended.\n\nWHAT NOT TO BRING\n\nP
 lease leave electronic games\, iPods\, fidget spinners\, or other distra
 cting items at home.\n\nDangerous items that may be considered weapons\,
  including matches or pocketknives\, are not allowed.\n\nJUNIOR NATURALI
 ST BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS\n\nâ€¢ Stay within sight of the group at all ti
 mes.\nâ€¢ Be respectful of teachers\, staff\, volunteers\, other student
 s\, and yourself.\nâ€¢ Keep your hands to yourself. Do not touch other p
 eople or their belongings without permission.\nâ€¢ Come prepared for the
  dayâ€™s activities with appropriate clothing and equipment.\nâ€¢ Apply 
 sunscreen and bug spray at home before arriving.\nâ€¢ Help keep the Natu
 re Center and Preserve clean by picking up your belongings and disposing
  of trash properly.\nâ€¢ Be willing to experience new activities\, place
 s\, and friendships.\nâ€¢ DO NOT feed the animals at any time\, includin
 g education animals.\n\nEXAMPLES OF BEHAVIORS THAT ARE NOT ACCEPTED\nâ€¢
  Angry or vulgar language\, including swearing\, name calling\, or shout
 ing.\nâ€¢ Behavior that poses a safety risk to the student or others.\nâ
 €¢ Unwanted physical contact with another person.\nâ€¢ Harassment or int
 imidation through words\, gestures\, body language\, or other threatenin
 g behavior.\nâ€¢ Disrespectful behavior toward group leaders\, staff\, v
 olunteers\, or other students.\nâ€¢ Theft or destruction of another pers
 onâ€™s property.\nCONSEQUENCES OF UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR\n\n1. Your child
  will receive a warning and be redirected back to the group activities.\
 n2. Second occurrence â€” Your child may not be able to participate in t
 he activity for the remainder of the day\, and parents/guardians will be
  informed at pick up time.\n3. Third occurrence â€” Parents/guardians wi
 ll be contacted\, and the child may no longer be able to participate in 
 the program. No refunds will be provided for exclusion due to unacceptab
 le behavior.\n\nWe want every child to feel comfortable\, safe\, and sup
 ported during the program. If your child is experiencing any difficultie
 s during the week\, please let us know. Our goal is to provide a fun\, s
 afe\, and educational experience for all participants.\n\nHEALTH ISSUES 
 / EMERGENCY PROCEDURES\nOur program is designed to keep students active 
 and outdoors for most of the day. Please monitor your childâ€™s health e
 ach morning and do not bring a sick child to the program. A child who is
  ill may become uncomfortable and could expose other students and adults
  to illness. If your child becomes sick during the day\, a parent/guardi
 an or designated emergency contact will be contacted for pickup.\n\nIf a
  minor injury or health concern occurs and your child requires medical a
 ttention\, the following procedures will be followed:\nâ€¢ Parents/guard
 ians or family members will be informed of the incident at the end of th
 e day unless immediate notification is necessary.\nâ€¢ First aid will be
  provided and the incident will be documented on an accident report form
 .\nâ€¢ The child will be continuously observed and cared for during and 
 after first aid is provided.\n\nIn the event of a serious injury or heal
 th emergency requiring professional medical care:\nâ€¢ Parents/guardians
  or emergency contacts will be notified immediately.\nâ€¢ 911 emergency 
 services may be contacted.\nâ€¢ A responsible adult may accompany the ch
 ild to the hospital if a parent/guardian or emergency contact cannot be 
 reached.\nâ€¢ The incident and any first aid provided will be fully docu
 mented.\n\nIf you prefer different emergency procedures for your child\,
  please indicate them on the registration forms.\nOur goal is to provide
  a wonderful\, fun\, safe\, and educational Junior Naturalist experience
  that encourages curiosity\, scientific thinking\, environmental steward
 ship\, and a lifelong appreciation for nature.\nGet ready for an excitin
