SUMMARY:Young Naturalist Camp
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 2026 Young Naturalist Program for students en
 tering grades 4â€“6 in September 2026. The program will take place at th
 e Madrona Marsh Preserve and Nature Center\, located at 3201 Plaza del A
 mo\, Torrance\, CA 90503. For additional information\, please call 310-7
 82-3989.\n\nWe are very excited that your child will be participating in
  this program. We have planned a week full of fascinating\, exciting\, e
 ducational\, and fun activities for our Young Naturalists. We look forwa
 rd to sharing our love of nature and environmental exploration with your
  child.\nArrival and Pick Up Information\nParents/guardians\, please dro
 p off and pick up your child in the Nature Center Classroom on time.\nâ€
 ˘ Drop off: 9:00 AM\nâ€˘ Pick up: 3:00 PM\nIf someone other than a paren
 t or caregiver will be picking up your child\, that person must be at le
 ast 18 years old. Please provide written permission including the indivi
 dualâ€™s name.\nMinimum Enrollment Requirement\nA minimum of 10 students
  is required for the Young Naturalist Program. If minimum enrollment is 
 not met\, families will be notified approximately 3â€“4 days before the 
 start date regarding any program cancellation.\nYoung Naturalist Goals\n
 Through hands-on learning experiences\, children will learn to appreciat
 e\, protect\, and preserve our unique and diverse wildlife and habitats.
 \nProgram Details\nOur week will rotate around group and individual acti
 vities that focus on different themes including soil\, water\, sun and e
 nergy\, observation skills\, map reading\, birds\, insects\, mammals\, p
 lants\, and how they work together to create an ecosystem. Each student 
 will receive a journal for personal use throughout the week. Students wi
 ll also complete a project of their choosing related to nature and Madro
 na Marsh. Each activity is designed to help students better understand w
 hat it means to be a naturalist while practicing the skills to become on
 e.\n\nThe program provides a light lunch consisting of a prepackaged san
 dwich\, fruit\, chips\, and cookies. Water will always be available.\nWe
 ekly Schedule\nDay 1: Ecosystem Basics\nExploring the Nature Center\, ga
 rdens\, and preserve. Introduction to mapping\, soil\, plants\, sunlight
 \, and energy. Learning what it means to be a naturalist. Introduction a
 nd discussion of the independent project. Students may use different for
 ms of media to promote nature\, including storytelling\, puppet shows\, 
 music\, songs\, videos\, PowerPoint presentations\, poetry\, and art. Pr
 ojects are due Friday.\nDay 2: Insects and Reptiles\nObservation and exp
 loration activities focused on insects and reptiles found at Madrona Mar
 sh.\nDay 3: Birds\nBird observation\, identification\, and learning abou
 t bird habitats and behavior.\nDay 4: Mammals of the Preserve\nExplorati
 on and discussion of mammals and their role within the ecosystem.\nDay 5
 : Project Presentations and Nature Celebration\n\nFinalizing and present
 ing independent projects. Awarding certificates to students completing t
 he program and personal project. Nature games and group activities.\nWha
 t to Bring\n\n 	Jacket\, hat\, and sunscreen. A good portion of our time
  will be spent outdoors on the Preserve.\n 	Closed-toe shoes.\n 	Comfort
 able clothing suitable for outdoor activities and nature exploration.\n 
 	Small snack (optional).\n 	Reusable water bottle.\n 	Small backpack for
  personal belongings.\n 	Markers or colored pencils for drawing and jour
 naling activities.\n 	Students may bring an iPhone\, tablet\, or camera 
 with the necessary charger only if needed for their project. Students ar
 e solely responsible for their equipment.\n 	Labeling your childâ€™s bel
 ongings is highly recommended.\n\nWhat Not to Bring\nPlease leave electr
 onic games\, iPods\, fidget spinners\, special toys\, or other distracti
 ng items at home. These items may distract students from group activitie
 s and can become disruptive or unsafe during the program. Dangerous item
 s that may be considered weapons\, including matches or pocketknives\, a
 re not allowed.\nYoung Naturalist Behavior Expectations\n\n 	Stay within
  sight of the group at all times.\n 	Be respectful of teachers\, staff\,
  other students\, and yourself.\n 	Keep your hands to yourself. Do not t
 ouch other people or their belongings without permission.\n 	Come prepar
 ed for the dayâ€™s activities with appropriate clothing and equipment.\n
  	Apply sunscreen and bug spray at home before arriving.\n 	Help keep th
 e Nature Center and Preserve clean by picking up your belongings and dis
 posing of trash properly.\n 	Be willing to experience new activities\, p
 laces\, and friendships.\n 	DO NOT feed the animals at any time\, includ
 ing education animals.\n\nExamples of Behaviors That Are Not Accepted\n\
 n 	Angry or vulgar language\, including swearing\, name calling\, or sho
 uting.\n 	Behavior that poses a safety risk to the student or others.\n 
 	Unwanted physical contact with another person.\n 	Harassment or intimid
 ation through words\, gestures\, body language\, or other threatening be
 havior.\n 	Disrespectful behavior toward group leaders\, staff\, volunte
 ers\, or other students.\n 	Theft or destruction of another personâ€™s p
 roperty.\n\nConsequences of Unacceptable Behavior\n\n 	Your child will r
 eceive a warning and be redirected back to the group activities.\n 	Seco
 nd occurrence â€” Your child may not be able to participate in the activ
 ity for the remainder of the day\, and parents/guardians will be informe
 d at pick up time.\n 	Third occurrence â€” Parents/guardians will be con
 tacted\, and the child may no longer be able to participate in the progr
 am. No refunds will be provided for exclusion due to unacceptable behavi
 or.We want every child to feel comfortable\, safe\, and supported during
  the program. If your child is experiencing any difficulties during the 
 week\, please let us know. Our goal is to provide a fun\, safe\, and edu
 cational experience for all participants.\n\nHealth Issues / Emergency P
 rocedures\nOur program is designed to keep students active and outdoors 
 for most of the day. Please monitor your childâ€™s health each morning a
 nd do not bring a sick child to the program. A child who is ill may beco
 me uncomfortable and could expose other students and adults to illness. 
 If your child becomes sick during the day\, a parent/guardian or designa
 ted emergency contact will be contacted for pickup.\n\nIf a minor injury
  or health concern occurs and your child requires medical attention\, th
 e following procedures will be followed:\nâ€˘ Parents/guardians or famil
 y members will be informed of the incident at the end of the day unless 
 immediate notification is necessary.\nâ€˘ First aid will be provided and
  the incident will be documented on an accident report form.\nâ€˘ The ch
 ild will be continuously observed and cared for during and after first a
 id is provided.\n\nIn the event of a serious injury or health emergency 
 requiring professional medical care:\nâ€˘ Parents/guardians or emergency
  contacts will be notified immediately.\nâ€˘ 911 emergency services may 
 be contacted.\nâ€˘ A responsible adult may accompany the child to the ho
 spital if a parent/guardian or emergency contact cannot be reached.\nâ€˘
  The incident and any first aid provided will be fully documented.\n\nIf
  you prefer different emergency procedures for your child\, please indic
 ate them on the registration forms.\n\nOur goal is to provide a wonderfu
 l\, fun\, and safe Young Naturalist Program with meaningful learning opp
