The fifth-grade class of 2026 from Victor Elementary School in Torrance (approximately 180 students over a three-day time span) went beyond their classroom walls during a visit to Madrona Marsh in December, exploring the food web of the Great Horned Owl. During their visit, they got a taste of what it’s like to make observations as field ecologists, exploring the Marsh and looking for evidence of the various organisms that are part of the owl’s food web. They used their observations, and their own bodies!, to construct a dynamic model of the owl’s food web. They also took on the role of laboratory scientists as they looked for further evidence of owls’ feeding habits.
