Get Involved! Volunteer
Volunteering is a meaningful way to help preserve the Madrona Marsh Preserve. We value your time, effort, and commitment to a worthwhile job. All of our volunteers receive training in their chosen position or may need to attend a short orientation.
We value your skills and would be delighted if you could share them at the Preserve and Nature Center. We are always seeking a few friends to share a few hours of their time.
You can apply for any volunteer position by completing our online application. You can choose your availability and select up to three preferred positions in the application. If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments, please email us at nature1@torranceca.gov.

Here are just a few activities that may be available:
Gift Shop
Spend 3-4 hours in the gift shop once or twice a month. The shop is generally open on Friday and Saturday, and during special events at the Nature Center.
Outreach
We need some Friends who would staff a table at various local events in the South Bay. This is typically a half-day commitment to smile, distribute flyers, and discuss Madrona Marsh. Occasionally, the event host supplies lunch, and you always meet interesting people.
Front Desk Reception
Front desk volunteers are the first friendly face guests see upon visiting the Nature Center. A warm, welcoming smile and strong customer service are most valued. Reception volunteers are the primary point of contact for guest services, including answering phones, addressing guest questions, and staying up to date on events at the Nature Center. Receptionists may take first-time visitors on a short tour of the Nature Center, but listen for the phone. Walk around the Nature Center every half hour to ensure everything is in order in the classroom and exhibit hall. It’s often necessary to tidy up the classroom and the flyers.
Front Gate Reception
Front gate volunteers are the first friendly face guests see upon visiting the Preserve. Greet all visitors with a warm, welcoming smile and a friendly good morning/afternoon. Front gate volunteers are the primary point of contact for guest services, including answering guest questions and staying up to date on what is happening on the Preserve. Many visitors enjoy chatting with the receptionist about what they saw on the Preserve. It is also important to accurately count visitors entering and exiting the Preserve.
Guided Tour Docents
Docents lead tours for all ages, including preschoolers, K-12 school groups, college/university classes, and various adult groups. The main tour season runs from September through May, typically on weekdays from 10:00-12:00, with some off-season, afternoon, and weekend options. Docents can select tours based on availability and interest. More information on becoming a docent is available here.
Habitat Restoration
Would you like to help create and learn about different habitats? Help us remove non-native plants, replace them with locally grown native plants, and pick up trash left at the Preserve. Soon, the work you complete will attract many birds, butterflies, and other insects.
Open to all ages. Participants ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult, and all participants ages 18 and under must have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. Participants must arrive on time and wear closed-toed shoes. Please bring your own drinks and snacks.
Long-Term
Volunteers
There are many opportunities to help out at The Nature Center & Preserve. Learn to be a trained docent, staff the Gift Shop, Front Desk, Gate, or work outside with restoration or in the nursery. The staff will work with you to place you in a spot to best use your specific talents.
These are long-term volunteer positions through the City of Torrance.
