Nature is truly amazing, and we are fortunate to have a place as special as the Madrona Marsh Preserve, one of the last remaining seasonal wetlands in Los Angeles County. It is a perfect outdoor classroom where students can explore, ask questions, make discoveries, and experience nature firsthand.
This summer, our Young Naturalist and Junior Naturalist programs gave students the opportunity to discover the Marsh through hands-on learning. Throughout the week of each program, they explored the Preserve, observed native plants and wildlife, learned about ecology and wetlands, tested water quality, used field journals and scientific tools, and discovered how scientists observe, ask questions, and better understand the natural world. Every day brought new experiences and opportunities to learn something new.
One of our favorite parts of the program was watching the students become more confident each day. They began noticing details they had never seen before, asking thoughtful questions, and excitedly sharing their discoveries with one another. Their curiosity reminded us that some of the best learning happens when we spend time in nature.
More than anything, we hope each student leaves Madrona Marsh with wonderful memories, new knowledge, and a greater appreciation for the natural world. We hope this experience is just the beginning of their journey as naturalists and inspires them to continue learning, exploring, and growing through the Madrona Marsh Naturalist Programs.
The Madrona Marsh Naturalist Programs are sponsored by the Friends of Madrona Marsh and the City of Torrance. The Young Naturalists Program is for students in grades 4 – 6, while the Junior Naturalists are grades 6 – 8. A Senior Naturalists Program (grades 9 – 12), now in development, will focus on ecological research, habitat restoration, environmental monitoring, and advanced scientific inquiry.
Below is the Naturalist Pledge that every participant in the Young Naturalist and Junior Naturalist programs committed themselves to. We invite all our members to commit to this pledge, as well:

I promise to respect nature and treat all living things with care.
I will observe with curiosity and learn from the world around me.
I will be responsible in my actions and protect the places I explore.
I will not interfere with wildlife but allow nature to thrive on its own.
I will share what I learn and inspire others to care for our natural world.
I will be a friend to the Earth and help keep it safe and healthy.
